Busy, Busy Auntie from Halifax

My Auntie Marilyn (one of my all-time favorites who I don’t get to see often) flew in on Friday from Halifax. Emma and I went to pick her up from the airport. We were able to do this because I had her flight information (hint, hint Laura!). Anyways, it has been wonderful visiting with her over the last couple of days. We had dinner with her at my mom’s place with Jason (my brother), his wonderful kids and wife.

Last night my Auntie Dee drove in from Devon and we had both aunts and my mom over for one of Mark’s spectacular barbecues. He made ribs and shish ka bobs. Delish! He’s in the middle of making Kris, Emmy and I a big breakfast right now. He is such a great cook! It seems like Emma always wants to be nursed right when I should be starting dinner because I nurse her right when I get home from work. I think I’ll nurse her forever…Mark is a much better cook than I!!! Continue reading

Going home from Fernie

Well, Sunday night, Emma woke up at 10:30 and was up and down until about 3am!  It was horrible!  Every time that we thought that we had her asleep, she would cry as soon as we tried to get away.  Since we were trying to sleep in the same room, we couldn’t even let her cry for a bit.

Also, despite Paula’s claims of breast feeding until she is 8, Emma seems to be losing some interest.  More and more she is prefering solid food before bed time.  Of course, if she wakes up at night and in the morning, it is still milk or nothing!

Monday morning, we went for a nice walk down by the river and then got the circus on the road.

So since it took so long to get to Fernie, we were hoping to get home faster.  It took 6 hours!  Ok, so we stopped a few places on the way…  We left the condo and went into town to get gas.  Then back to the condo to check if Paula left her wallet…  Then stopped for a bite on the way out of town.  As we were going by the Michel Hotel (now closed! That sucks!), Paula said that we should stop there, so I pulled over.  I have always loved this huge pink hotel in the middle of nowhere.  It always had this erie feeling, and that is accented now that it is abandonded…  We looked around for a bit and frightened Paula.  We would have liked to go in and look around a bit more, but we did not have any lights.  I hope Gord (the owner and quite a character) did OK.  I remember him talking about having a boat somewhere, so hopefully he is off sailing.

Fernie — Trout Hatchery

On Sunday, we went to the Kootenay Trout Hatchery (http://www.gofishbc.com/kth.htm) which is alot cooler than it sounds! There’s a “museum” teaching about fish and hatchery programs. There are also alot of fish on display — Emma absolutely loved them. She knows the word and sign for fish so they were used like crazy! There were some really big ones there (rainbow trout I think) that she really enjoyed. Inside they had some that were pretty touchy that would swim away from the glass whenever you came near. Outside there were some turtles! I’m not sure if Emma understood that they weren’t rocks because they were mostly sitting very, very still. She did look at them for a long time though.

We had a picnic on the lawn there and were briefly attacked by wasps although I was the only one who really seemed bothered by them. The boys seemed to have a good time making fun of me shrieking and trying to shoo them away. Even Emma got in on the making fun of mommy action. Oh well, what do you do?

We were going to leave after lunch when Joe noticed a little trail with a bridge off to the side. We went over to check it out and realized that it was a Children’s pond. There was a Go Fish BC worker there with fishing poles, lures, bait, and everything else you needed to go fishing. It was a catch and release pond that only children are allowed to fish in. There were several fishing and after some convincing, Kris joined in too! There seemed to be this one “magic” spot where kids were just pulling fish out of like crazy. When they caught one, the worker would run over with a net and a bucket of water. She’d put the fish in the bucket and take the barbless hook out of it’s mouth. Then the kids could all check it out. Emma loved petting the fish. She’s normally pretty timid but managed to be fairly bold on this occassion. She squealed when she touched it.

A weekend in Fernie

We came up to Fernie for the weekend (for my birthday and just to get away for a bit).

Friday Uncle Chris came over for a while before we left and we all just hung out and played in the back yard until we found the biggest spider that I have seen in Calgary! So, we all took pictures of that for a while. Meanwhile, Joe is trying to call us to tell us that he was ready to go… Oh well. Between traffic and stops for food and gas (the Tsuu Tina reserve is a definite “Must miss!”), it took about 6 1/2 hours to get here (it is about a 3 1/2 hour drive. Some of that was traffic and some of that was because we stopped at a gas station at the reservation and it took forever! We also found this great water park in Coleman and ran around a bit for a great chance to exercise and strech.

Saturday morning we were talking to Dad and he was mentioning that he had a friend with horses. So, of course we were trying to think of a way to mooch a trip out to see them! Then we were going to go do some stuff in the mountains and when we went to get into the truck, Emma insisted on going for a walk by the river first. When we got back to the truck, there was Dad’s friend who has a horse! So we chatted, and she offered to take us to see the horses. So, we ended up going out to “Trit Trot Farms”. First we played with the cats and dogs, and then went to see the horse. Emma was not at all sure about this huge horse (she initially called it a “dog”), although by the end she was warming up to them. Emma got her first quick horse ride, and then she let Kris ride the horse for a while. There was a huge paddock and Kris just got to ride around for as long as he wanted. He had a HUGE smile the whole time! I think that he had a great time!
