The Environmental Impact of Large Families

With the birth of octuplets, Nadya Suleman has thrust herself into the lime light.  There are many concerns regarding her mental well-being, fitness as a parent, ability to physically raise 14 kids, financial abilities, emotional abilities, etc.  What has not been receiving as much attention is the environmental impact that she and her 14 kids are making on the entire planet.

The diapers for the octuplets alone add up to a staggering number of 32,000 in their first two years.  32,000 diapers sitting in landfills because one can assume that she has neither the financial ability to hire a diaper service or the time to wash cloth diapers herself.  How much oil is needed to produce those diapers?  Some estimate that it takes approximately 1 cup of crude oil to produce one diaper.  32,000 cups of crude oil to make the diapers.  Assume that each diaper change uses 2 wipes each and that’s 64,000 wipes in the trash too!

Nadya Suleman is the personification of over consumption.  A person in her financial and emotional state is not capable of taking care of themselves or even one or two babies.  For her to have 6 is crazy, never mind the octuplets!  And it’s not as though she got into the situation “accidentally”.  She used IVF for every pregnancy.  She’s not a young teenager who’s birth control failed her or who had a broken condom or an irresponsible night.  She’s in her thirties and very purposely set out to over populate her family in a world full of children starving to death.

Strapped for Cash? A No Fax Payday Loan Could Be An Answer!

It seems as though everyone is strapped for cash right now as the economy slowly crumbles around us. The banks are very hesitant to lend money to people because of all of the issues with the economy. Money is tight as many people live from paycheck to paycheck — and those are the lucky ones who still have their jobs! Many people are forced to rely on high interest short term payday loans that they have to stand in long lines for and fill out a ton of forms. There are some services that provide online payday loans quickly and reliably. A No Fax Payday Loan involves an online transaction to get the money you need fast without leaving your home and with no credit checks which takes the hassle and struggle out of getting the short term loan that you need. Payday loans are not always the best option but it’s good to know they are there as a last resort. With so many people struggling to make ends meet, it’s hard to realize that there will be an end to all of this. What everyone needs to do right now is just get through it. Some people are predicting that the economy crisis will actually end up bringing people closer together and encourage people to help each other more as so many are in the same sort of predicament. It would be nice to see something so great come out of something that has been so hard for so many people.

Nadya Suleman (aka the Octumom) Gets a Million Dollar Offer

The story of Nadya Suleman just gets weirder every single day.  She has 6 kids at home and 8 newborn babies still in the hospital.  She has no money, no job, no education, no resources, no community support, waning parental support and clearly needs professional counselling.  Maybe she could pay for it with her newest offer of $1 million dollars.  Vivid entertainment has offered her a million dollar contract to become a “Vivid Girl”.  She would have to do multiple pornos but would get the money she needs plus full benefits for her and all her kids.  You can’t even make up stories this weird!  But the plot gets even weirder…a rival porn company, Pink Entertainment, has offered her a year’s supply of diapers to not sign with Vivid on the basis of morals.  That’s right, a porn company with morals.  I wonder how much a year’s supply of diapers for her would really cost…I think she has 10 in diapers!  Stories like this really bring out the worst in some people…like Vivid Entertainment.  Everyone is criticizing her for trying to become famous and sponge off of the public with her outrageous story while media outlets, talk shows, and even porn companies all fight for a part of her and her kids.  And we, the public, just keep eating it up while we sit in judgement of her.  Clearly her situation that she has put herself into is completely wrong.  It’s wrong for her, for the kids, and for the planet.  However, it’s kind of too late to say that she shouldn’t have had those kids.  In fact, it’s way too late.  What people should be talking about is how things are going to go from here on.  Whether she should even be able to bring those babies into a home that is unsafe, too small and severely lacking funds or if they would be better off elsewhere.

Fat Burners

There are tons of products out there designed for people to burn fat and lose weight.  Anything from exercise equipment, reality shows, sports clothes, nutritional supplements and weight loss pills.  There is a huge industry trying to get people’s money and fulfill people’s dreams of getting healthy and losing those extra pounds.  One kind of weight loss pill is supposed to be a fat burner.  One of these is called Ephadrasil hardcore which is proported to be a mood enhancing, appetite suppressing, fat burning pill.  What else do you even need? lol.  One downside to this pill and others like it, is that it is full of stimulants which can make you pretty jittery, similar to caffeine.  Before beginning any new pill or weight loss program, ensure that you talk to your family doctor about what programs and medications may or may not be appropriate for you.

Winter Photo Shoot

I did a photo shoot with my toddler tonight for an upcoming article of mine that will (hopefully) be published on greenupgrader.com.  I decided to take pics of her in her various shirts that have environmental sayings on them as a way to promote sustainability and green-ness to people she meets.  I also thought that outdoors-y pics would be a good choice as it is for a green website.  Some I did by our giant tiki head, some by a vase of flowers and lastly, a few shots outside.  This might have turned out better if it had been warm outside instead of winter in Canada.  Oh, and it was night time too so the photography shoot was after dark and therefore, even colder.  Sometimes the road to hell is paved with good intentions.  Here’s the last shot of her that I took showing how much she didn’t love it.  Maybe next time I should think twice or maybe just put on a coat!  lol–It wasn’t nearly as bad as she makes it look in the picture.

The Power of Now

I’ve been reading alot of Eckhart Tolle lately.  I’ve found that it’s a little deep for bedtime reading but I’m almost through Reawakening to a New Earth and hope to start the Power of Now soon.  He details living in the moment instead of in the past or in the future.  I am in total agreement with him up to a point.  I mean, reliving our pasts can show us the mistakes that we’ve made and hopefully, how to avoid them in the future.  Planning for the future whether it’s with term life insurance companies planning policies in case of your demise or with banks planning for your retirement or your children’s education, the future is daunting, and requires a plan.  Tolle believes in being goal-oriented with each step of the process being your goal.  For example, if you want to get the book across the room from you, your first goal would be to stand up and then to take a step, etc.  He philosophizes that only through experiencing each moment as it comes can we become one with our purpose and spirituality.  Like I said, a little too deep for bedtime reading.  I may have to run through it a second time when I’m fully awake instead of falling asleep!

Making Technology Beautiful

Flat screen televisions are all the range but can really leave a lot to be desired in terms of design and style.  There’s a new kind of tv stand now that really combines style, function, technology and design all in one package.  Not only to these kinds of tv stands mount the television at the right level for viewing, they also provide stylish storage solutions underneath while looking more like a traditional side table than an ugly tv stand or entertainment center.  It’s nice to see design keeping up with technology and shows how it pays to shop around for the design and style of furniture that you are looking for and that will really suit your decor.  Happy shopping everyone!

Dreaming of the Sun

The winter here in Canada seems endless.  I spend day after day dreaming of the sun and springs return.  With the real estate market in the States going through such a major downturn, it makes it really tempting to relocate to Scottsdale or somewhere with a similar climate.  Anywhere in Arizona really sounds good right about now.

I’m currently watching it snow here, for what seems like the millionth day in a row.  We struggle with boots, scarves, toques and snow suits as the weather in Arizona is in the 80′s.  It just makes you shake your head and wonder what you’re really doing.  I bet there is no such things as long underwear or fuzzy mittens in Arizona!  No more struggling trying to wrestle kids into their snow suits either…oh to live the dream.

Even if you couldn’t actually live all year round in Arizona, it seems like it would be a great place to have a vacation condo or even a rental condo poolside.  Imagine laying in a lounge chair by the pool — your only worries being if you have enough sunscreen on.  For now, I’ll cuddle up chilly next to the fireplace, dreaming of a warmer day in sunny Arizona.

Gender Differences in Young Children

It’s amazing to me the differences that the genders seem to have “built in” upon birth.  Toy preferences I’ve noticed are especially pronounced.  I’ve got two kids –  a 14 year old boy and an almost 3 year old girl.  I’ve tried to raise them both to be very “gender neutral”.  The first toy I ever bought for my son was a doll.  It was probably also the least played with toy as he gravitated towards trucks, cars, guns (which he was strictly not allowed to play with), legos, and action figures.  Our little girl is definitely what one would call a “girly girl”.  A complete little princess who actually walks around singing the song from Snow White “Someday my Prince will Come”.  Today at a play center she decided that one of the little boys running around was her Prince Charming, her one true love.  Absolutely hysterical to watch that kid run away from her as fast as he could!

She loves dolls.  We’ve encouraged her to play with all kinds of toys.  Everything from tools to cars to barbies to puzzles to books or train sets.  Chances are though that the only thing she really drags around with her are her favorite dolls — Lucy and Molly.  She takes them everywhere.  Feeds them, changes their diapers, disciplines them by putting them on the naughty step, and even breast feeds them!  I guess that gender preferences are both nature and nurture and that the uneneding debate between the two is pointless.  It does however seem that kids seem born with some things.
