Vegan Shoes
Are you looking for a more environmentally friendly shoe? Try these vegan shoes from Dansko. They come in 3 colors and are made from a material called veg-tan instead of leather. Animals require far more water to maintain than vegetables do. They also produce pollution — what polite folks call methane gas and I just call gas. Vegetables are a much better choice for the planet as a food source and raw material in production. Many people are becoming vegetarians and vegans as a way to help the planet. These shoes, or others like them, would be a good choice for vegetarians, omnivores and vegans alike!
How Can a Rolex Watch Save The Planet?
Are you looking for a real rolex at a reduced price? Tired of all those fakes everywhere but can’t afford to buy the “real deal”? Check out www.bestoftime.com. They are an accredited Better Business Bureau company that sells actual Rolex watches at sizeable discounts. How do they do it? They are an independent retailer so they are free of the manufacturer’s price controls. Also, they sell pre-owned watches. Okay, buying a Rolex may not save the planet. However, shopping used is a great way to save money and be environmentally friendly at the same time. What more can you ask for in a high-end luxury watch? Oh, you want to know what time it is too…don’t worry, they’ve got that covered! Definitely worth checking out. Buying used keeps things out of the landfill, reduces pollution caused by over production and discourages over-consumption. Why buy new when used works just as well?

Eco-Friendly Perfume
There are several blog sites devoted exclusively to perfumes — a perfume blog if you will. Perfumes are usually made of synthetic fragrances and chemicals to simulate the smells that are provided by nature — gardenia, lillies, roses, fruits, etc. Traditional perfumes generally contain less than 3% of actual essential oils of the plants they are trying to emulate. Aromatherapy generally uses 100% essential oils or at least infused oils to perfume the skin. These eco-friendly perfumes are much less likely to have adverse reactions for the wearer such as rashes, oversensitivity of the skin or watery eyes. Without the chemicals to preserve them though, eco-friendly perfumes do not last as long. Sometimes this is a good thing though. More traditionally synthetically made perfumes can sometimes have the scent lingering for days at a time. This isn’t so good if you don’t wear the same scent every single day.
Essential oils slowly lose their potency throughout the day with the lightest notes of the scent going first, then the mid notes. By the end of the day, you’re left with the heavier notes of the scent. These too will naturally evaporate away. Some of my favourite scents such as lily of the valley or liliacs are lighter sweet scents that fade away naturally throughout the day. The essential oils are not overpowering for myself or others around me. Often people are allergic to certain scents of perfumes that cause them to sneeze. This is why in some places such as hospitals, doctor’s offices and schools, they ask that no one wear perfume at all. Essential oils generally don’t bother these highly sensitive allergic folks at all. Just another advantage of going green!

Eco-Friendly Blogs Aggregator
I just thought I’d let all my readers know that I’ve created an aggregator named Eco-Friendly Blogs at FeedCluster.com blog aggregators. I know not all of my posts are eco-friendly but a great majority are. I’ve tried to make this blog all encompassing right now with all kinds of posts about family and parenting issues, art, offbeat news, humor, travel and shopping. But the truth is, going green is one of my main concerns. It’s the lens with which I view the world. So, I may be talking about shopping but what I’m shopping for is quite often organic or fair trade. I may be talking about art but often it’s upcycled art or art that inspires imagination about the environment in which we live. Again, that’s not always the case but it usually is.
If you’d like to add your blog to this aggregator, go here. I’d love to see and read more green entries and become part of a wider blogging community. The more people sign up, the better! Remember, not all of your posts have to be 100% green. What I’m looking for is people who are taking steps towards going green. Families and individuals who want to learn more about going green and blog about it along the way. I look forward to seeing you there! I’ll update and provide link as other blogs are added to the aggregator.

Hoping to Make More Money? Get Advice from a Multimillionaire!
The recession has everyone reevaluating their finances. Many people are realizing that they simply cannot afford to maintain the same lifestyle in this economy. Jobs are being lost in record numbers and this has lead to a wave of foreclosures throughout Canada and the United States. Who better to get advice from than someone who has money?
Mack Michaels, a multimillionaire, now has a series of videos on his Maverick Money Makers by Michaels website. The site already has over 100 videos listed with more being added every single month. He is hoping that this is the money making course that you’ll have to buy as his series is so comprehensive. He has all sorts of money making plans from quick and easy plans to more elaborate and long term plans.
It’s suggested that you watch at least one of the strategy videos that are available to watched in the middle of the page after logging in. These will give you an overview of the website and help you decide which plan would be the best one for you to start with. This is not one of those plans where everyone has to follow the exact same path. There are many to choose from so that you can pick whichever suits you the best. They are all presented in video format for ease and simplicity of use. This comprehensive site may just be the way that you find your path to financial security. Good luck!

Earth Day vs. Valentine’s Day

What do Earth day and Valentine’s day have in common? They are both one day only events that should really last all year. Don’t you think that the planet that we live on deserves more than just one day a year? You’d think that it would be more important than that. Are we really that arrogant that we think one day of celebrating it and doing one green act will really make a dent in the damage that has been done?
Valentine’s day is the day to celebrate your love. This too should be celebrated all day long. I believe in this idea so much that I really don’t celebrate Valentine’s day with my spouse. We need to spend each day in love with each other, respecting each other, cherishing, appreciating and gifting each other with random acts.
So, did I celebrate Earth day? Well, actually I did. I think that it’s my responsibility as a parent to raise my children to appreciate the world around us and to realize that every green act, regardless how small, is a step in the right direction. I bought my daughter an Earth Day 2009 t-shirt and we lugged our reusable bags to the park to fill with garbage. While we picked it up, I spoke with her, at a 3 year old level, why it’s so important to not litter. Imagine what the world would look like if everyone littered! As the years go on, our random acts of green will become bigger and the explanations will become longer. The important thing to remember is that this is an everyday experience in our family, not just a one day event. Recycling is something we do as a family. We also try to buy used when possible and sell or donate our cast-offs instead of tossing them. We even have made a dog toy out of scraps from the house! Live green everyday.
Modern Handmade Batik
Batik is a fabric that is decorated with a traditional wax-resist dye method. It is a Malaysian word and is very popular there. It’s also gaining popularity throughout the world. Designers have recognized that the material brings in a very traditional feel to modern, cutting edge pieces. The juxtaposition of the old type of fabric and the new style of clothing makes this material indispensable.
Batik can be used for nearly anything from home decor pieces such as table runners and placemats to formal wear batik pieces in silk to casual wear batik pieces in cotton to fashion accessories such as scarves and purses. Many manufacturers have moved away from the hand-made batik to more cost effective and high production machinery work to replicate the hand done style. In my opinion, nothing beats handmade.
KrafOnline carries a wide range of handmade batik clothing items, accessories and home decor items. These products would be great as gifts as well as for personal use. This is definitely worth taking a look at. The colours and range of products are astounding.
Pictures of Boobs!!! — Made You Look!
These photos are part of Chris Jordan’s amazing series called Running the Numbers. Although I do have an Aunt with the same name, they are of no relation (unfortunately!). In the series, he takes some staggering statistics and portrays them in images. These images paint a picture of Western civilization, specifically America, in a very unflattering light. Unfortunately, the unflattering light is also realistic.
This 60′ x 80′ photograph entitled Barbie Dolls from 2008 is composed of many smaller photos. 32,000 pictures of barbies. This is the amount of elective breast augementation surgeries performed every month in the United States in 2006. That’s right. 32,000 every month! I love that he chose a nude barbie to visual represent this stat. What exactly is the physical, emotional, spiritual and environmental cost of a nation trying to achieve the same look as the Barbie doll? I’m definitely going to have to look into the environmental consequences of breast implants now!
Women have been sexualized and idealized based on their physical appearance for centuries. All I can think of when I look at these images is “Is this really how I want to raise my daughter?”. We’re living in a world obsessed with breasts, with beauty, with consumption. Just makes me want to go and throw away all her darn Barbie dolls right now!!! A very thought provoking and enjoyable series. Definitely worth looking at the link. I’ll certainly be writing more about this artist in the future!

Crate & Barrel Over Packaging

Apparently Amazon isn’t the only company that needs to seriously re-evaluate it’s overpackaging issues. This package from Crate and Barrel contained two placemats and two bowl scrapers. This stuff isn’t even breakable! The size of the bowl is ridiculous. And the plastic air pillow and bubble wrap are completely unnecessary. This could have easily been sent in a large envelope.
The cost of this order in terms of shipping price and costs for packaging probably cost more than the actual order itself! Hopefully the failing economy will make companies re-evaluate their shipping costs and costs for packaging. Sometimes I think that the recession is actually good for the planet.
New Media Tool
There’s a cool new media tool that allows you to organize the results of your searches into playlists that can be saved and even shared with your friends. It’s emTain – Your Multimedia Find Engine. It searches through an ever growing list of video portals as a website application. But wait, that’s not all — lol. You can also use it as a tool on Twitter which has grown increasingly popular since the twitter duel between Ashton Kutcher and Larry King. It also as capabilites as a OSX dashboard widget and an iGoogle gadget. And yes, there is an iPhone app in the works! Definitely worth checking out.
