Life with Kids!

Life as a parent is completely different than life as a single person in so many ways.  Parents have to worry about a number of different things that wouldn’t even occur to people without kids.  Daycares, play centers, parenting workshops, schools, teachers, educational toys and books all become the the focus of our attention.  There’s more pressing things though that parents need to worry about.  Lately, many of my friends have been writing their wills.

My husband and I have been working out the details of what would happen if we were to both pass away.  We’ve just recently, as in two days ago, talked to the person who would get custody of the kids if we died.  I think he was shocked, to put it lightly, but agreed to the heavy duty burden that this would be.  Now, we just have to work out the financial aspects of our deaths.  First and foremost, a life insurance policy needs to be on our list of “to do’s”.

It’s not easy choosing a caregiver and arranging things to make your own death less cumbersome for those left behind.  As a parent though, it’s one of the big things that must be dealt with.  Your children are your most precious gift during your life and your death.  You really have to make sure that they are taken care of in the worst case scenario.  It’s depressing but it’s a reality.  I’d better get to it!

Incredible Reuse: Coffee Filter Dress

When it was time for this teenager’s prom, she didn’t want her dress to look like anyone else’s.  That is totally understandable but she took it to an entirely different level when she decided not only to make her own gown, but to not have it made out of fabric.  She considered other alternatives such as vegetables, stamps or bubble wrap but settled on coffee filters because of durability issues.  She also wanted something that she could dance in!

It took her a month of up to six hours a day on the dress. Aimee Kick became so engrossed in the process of folding, staining, drying and sewing that it was sometimes a struggle to make herself finish her homework first.  The filters are all sewn onto a fabric base and hand sewn into place.  This dress is not only beautiful, creative and totally unique, it also suits Aimee as an avid coffee drinker perfectly.

This creative reuse shows us how a seemingly ordinary, mundane object can be turned into something extraordinary with time, effort and imagination.  Just try to imagine what treasures may be hidden at the bottom of your garbage can or at the dump.  This dress may not be feasible or practical for everyone, but it clearly demonstrates how an item can be repurposed and saved from the landfill.  Try to look at objects that you bring into your home through Aimee’s eyes of creativity — what else could it be??

Pink Ribbon Gumballs

The pink ribbon is synonmous with breast cancer research.  Breast cancer is a disease that effects so many women worldwide.  Nearly everyone knows someone whose life has been touched by this disease in one way or another.  While breast cancer is suffered by mostly women, all of the people in those women’s lives are also affected.  Men, women and children have all suffered at the hands of this horrible disease.

The fundraising efforts for this disease have been incredible but must continue until a cure is found.  Now you can help support breast cancer research by supporting the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.  These fun and instantly recognizable Pink Ribbon Gumballs are a great way to show your company’s support for breast cancer research.  These machines could be used anywhere from women oriented businesses such as salons, spas and shoe stores to businesses oriented to the general public such as insurance agencies, grocery stores and malls.

You can also support the research on an individual level through these cute and colorful gumballs.  This clever product will help raise funds while showing that you care.  Follow the link for more information on how you can order this and support the cause.

Weird Online Ad: Used Prison Potty!

I’m all for re-use and recycling but this ad really takes the cake.  It’s definitely a few steps past the line for me anyways.  I can’t imagine what the heck you’d do with it.  A decorative planter for the front yard?  I’m sure the neighbors would love it.  How about putting it in the corner of your teenager’s room to remind them of how much worse things could be?  I certainly wouldn’t want my beer touching it…Just imagine how filthy disgustingly dirty it must be.  Bleach can only do so much.  Anyone have any creative re-use ideas for this??
