Some much needed comic relief….

What a crappy couple of days we’ve been having! Kris has had a hacking cough for a couple of weeks now that I kept thinking would just go away. On Sunday, I realized he needed to see a doctor soon. I was going to call for an appointment on Monday from work. When he got up on Monday morning, his eyes were bloodshot and had eyesnot everywhere. I knew he had an eye infection for sure and kept him home from school. I got Emma ready to go to daycare so that I could work at home for the day and hopefully get Kris in to see the doctor. I dropped her off and she seemed absolutely fine. I told her caregiver what was going on with Kris and that I’d be at home instead of at work. Then I drove home and made Kris some soup while I waited for the doctor’s office to open.
I called the office and they told me that our dr. wasn’t taking any appointments and was only available for “walk-in’s” in the afternoon. I took a deep breath and told myself he’d live — it was just pink eye and a cold. I made him comfortable and thought I had everything under control. Emma’s dayhome then called and said she’d woken up from her nap with a pink eye and that maybe she should go to the dr’s too. By the time I got there to pick her up, she was crying and had one eye almost swollen shut. I brought her home and washed her face as much as I could and nursed her until she was calm. Then I gathered up everything I’d need for the dr’s for and took both kids in. We were there for about 2 1/2 hours waiting to see our doctor which is completely crazy. I wonder how many other people in the waiting room with us came down with pink eye afterwards — it is sooo contagious. Kris was diagnosed with bronchitis and given antibiotics as well as drops for his eye infection. Emma too got the drops and the doctor even gave me a bottle in case I got them too — thankfully, Mark and I’s eyes look okay still.
Today is my scheduled day off work and I really need to get Kris’ passport for his Europe trip with my mom this summer so I dropped sick Kris off at school and Emma and I went off to the passport office. I thought we’d be there for hours and hours but it turned out to be a shorter wait than the doctor’s office. After about an hour and a half, our number was called. By this time, Emma was screaming and I’d actually been asked to leave a couple of times. I really didn’t want to bring her back again though or miss our number being called by trying to nurse her in the hall or something. After all that, his passport application was rejected because our guarantor signer was Michael who’s retired. I thought that this didn’t matter — apparently it does! They make everything so complicated on those applications, enough to drive you crazy! We stopped by and went for lunch with Mark before heading home.
We were driving down Deerfoot, and I was turning onto the off ramp for Beddington when all of a sudden everyone slammed on their brakes! Five rows of traffic came to a complete dead stop. The door of the minivan in front of me opened and out came this lady waving her arms around. I couldn’t see what the heck she was doing at first. Then others got out of their vehicles and finally I saw it, a mother duck and her babies were trying to cross the street. I started laughing so hard that Emma woke up and, startled by the sound of my hysterical laughter, started crying. Poor thing sure knows when her Mom has completely lost her mind. The sight of that duck and her babies was the funniest, cutest, most heartwarming thing that I’ve seen in such a long time. I laughed till I cried. We were stuck there for quite a while before the path was clear. The mom duck kept flapping her wings and trying to protect her ducklings from the crazy people trying to chase them or pick them up or anything to save their tiny lives. She was outright attacking people and quacking at the top of her lungs. Funniest things I’ve ever seen for sure.
Hopefully our week starts getting better — wish me luck! I need every bit of it I can get with two sick kids!
